Cat-astrophe averted

A distressed woman called firefighters to rescue her cat from a roof in South Dunedin about 2.40am yesterday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand station officer Ronald Oranje, of St Kilda station, said a ''distressed'' woman called the station to report her cat was on the roof of an empty house in Fawcett St and was ''meowing loudly''.

When a firefighter climbed up a small ladder to retrieve the cat,

the feline jumped on to a fence, and then to the ground, and ran off, Mr Oranje said

''It's quite common ... you never see a dead cat on a roof or up a tree,'' he said.
