Contractors last night removed a pedestrian overbridge at Caversham, an operation which closed a section of the northbound State Highway 1 route for about three hours.

The New Zealand Transport Agency put a detour in place for motorists travelling north on the approach to Dunedin city, redirecting traffic at the Barnes Dr intersection right and on to South Rd.

Traffic returned to SH1 via the Glen on-ramp, opposite the Railway Stand at Carisbrook.

A 70-tonne crane was used to lift the Goodall St overbridge from its supports shortly after 6pm.

The northbound traffic detour on SH1 was in place until about 9pm, while contractors took the last section of the footbridge away.

NZTA project manager Simon Underwood said the footbridge would be reinstalled and raised to a height of 6.2m.

The $19.5 million four-laning Caversham bypass project is projected to be completed by next July.
