City pipes being cleaned, checked

Pipes in and around Dunedin’s central city will get a clean and close-up investigation during the next seven weeks.

The Dunedin City Council has started cleaning and filming inside central city stormwater and wastewater pipes to check their condition and identify any pipes which needed replacing when the streets are upgraded as part of central city upgrades included in the 10-year plan.

The work started last night, and is expected to run until the end of October. All work will be done overnight, from 7pm to 7am, Sundays to Thursdays.

A high-pressure water blaster will be run down the drains to clean them out, and then underground cameras would be used to find any issues which needed to be fixed. Some traffic management would be needed, but lane closures would only be put in place after 11.45pm to minimise disruption to bus services. Where possible work would also be timed so pipes in areas around bars and restaurants were filmed at less busy mid-week times.

The filming work was expected to cost about $135,000.
