As temperatures dropped last month, so did Red Cross Southern's supply of warm bedding and clothing.

Retail co-ordinator Donna Baxter said a "really big demand" for bedding packs, probably due to the recession and cold weather, meant the organisation's supply was running low.

About 350 packs, which included a duvet, sheets, pillow cases, blankets and pillows, were handed out through welfare agencies each year.

Greatest demand was for double- and queen-sized bedding, as halls of residence donated their single-sized bedding at the end of each year.

An advertisement in Saturday's Otago Daily Times prompted some donations, but she hoped to receive many more in order to provide for the greater Otago and Southland area.

Alexandra, with a high of 4deg yesterday, was an area which needed more bedding urgently, she saidDonations can be made at the Red Cross shop in York Pl, or by phoning 477-1527 for collection.
