The news Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks will perform at the Forsyth Barr Stadium with The Pretenders in November has  produced a "great buzz" in Dunedin accommodation circles.

Otago Motel Association president Alex Greenan is expecting strong demand for accommodation and the announcement has already "definitely pushed it up" at his own premises, the Dunedin Palms Motel.

Nicks’ return for the November 24 concert will come just over two years after Fleetwood Mac’s sellout 2015 show, which drew a crowd of 35,000.

Tickets will go on sale at 1pm next Friday  and Mr Greenan said the "push" for motel accommodation was coming. Much of the accommodation could be taken by that date, he said.

The show’s timing, during the accommodation shoulder season, would boost demand and  be "great for our industry" and "fantastic" for the city.

He was "pretty optimistic" that the expected surge in  visitors would  bring big benefits to the wider Dunedin economy, including hospitality, because visitors would also be dining out and spending more broadly.

Dunedin i-Site visitor centre team leader Louise van de Vlierd said there was already a "lot of excitement" about the concert. Because the concert fell on a Friday night, visitors could also opt to spend a long weekend in the city, sparking wider economic benefits, she said.

I find it interesting that the articles to date almost talk as if the Pretenders are a support act. I strongly suspect Chrissie Hynde and the band currently calling themselves the Pretenders will blow Nicks off the stage. This isn't Fleetwood Mac and having seen Fleetwood Mac with and without Christine McVie in recent years I can tell you it wasn't Stevie who made the show. Dunedin inadvertantly received a significant upgrade when the originally promised Fleetwood Mac show didn't happen.
