Organised by the University of Otago research cluster for natural resources law, it will feature keynote addresses by Conservation Minister Tim Groser and Department of Conservation director-general Al Morrison.
University researchers from the divisions of humanities, commerce and science will present research on a range of issues from safe havens for Hector's dolphins, biodiversity and climate change, to tourism and Maori ownership claims.
Research cluster co-ordinator and senior law lecturer Jacinta Ruru said it was open to the public and would be a "fantastic opportunity" for anyone interested in the future management of public conservation lands and waters to come together and hear the latest research.
"It promises to be a lively and provocative morning."
The symposium will be held at Otago Museum's Hutton Theatre on July 10.
