Council goes extra mile

Who needs Google Street View when you have a helpful webmaster?

Dunedin City Council webmaster Sandy Graham recently took a punt on a strange email that arrived on the council's website one night.

The email, from a man in Manchester in the United Kingdom, asked if the council could pass on the message 'They are all mates - harp' to friends of his: "two lads in the lime green camper van in the town hall car park".

Ms Graham initially thought it was spam, but then reconsidered, thinking it would be worth a nice walk in the morning sun to find out if the green van was in the Filleul St car park.

"It was a gorgeous morning, so I printed it off and headed down, and there it was, so I knocked on the window."

Two tired men poked their heads out and Ms Graham passed on the message, hoping it was not a prank, but "they thought it was hilarious".

The men were travelling New Zealand and spending the day in Dunedin on their way up the South Island.

While it was initially thought the friend had tracked them down through the council webcam, it did not cover the area, so Ms Graham thought they had sent him a text him with their location.

"Part of our role is customer service," she said.
