As close as cousins can be, two Dunedin women put their heads together to come up with a way to raise funds for cancer and yesterday a tandem head-shave was their answer.

Cyndi Philip (29) and Zydina Barringer (19) have each had family members die from cancer.

Their grandmother died of breast cancer in 1997 and their grandfather died of lung cancer 10 years later.

They wanted to raise money for Canteen and had set up an online portal at www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/2cousinslosetheirmo.

They also had donation jars at Grinders cafe, Mitchell's Tavern and Andersons Bay Z petrol station.

Neither of the women was worried about what they might look like without hair; Miss Barringer said ''it will grow back'', and Miss Philip had done the shave in 2006 for child cancer.

The money raised will go towards Canteen Dunedin's winter camp next weekend, when 40 members will spend the weekend in Queenstown skiing and enjoying other tourist activities.

Otago Southland Canteen regional manager Donna davidson said the trip would cost up to $10,000 and any money raised would be a welcome relief for the agency, which receives no government funding.
