A St John ambulance officer treats a patient after a two car collision on Otago Peninsula yesterday.

Portobello Rd was closed for about an hour after the crash, which occurred between Doon St and Irvine Rd about 7am, Senior Srgeant Mark Crawford, of Dunedin, said.

The heavy rain made driving conditions ‘horrific' and motorists needed to ‘take care' when there was surface water on the road, he said.

Any witnesses were asked to contact Const Dave Bullot, of South Dunedin.

A St John spokeswoman said three people were taken to Dunedin hospital with moderate injuries.
