KC Racing crew members Michael Partel (left) and Jeff Sharp fix a release bearing on a Ford Escort gearbox at the Mitre 10 Mega Dunedin car park last night.
The car is taking part in the eight-day Silver Fern Rally, which stopped in the city last night.
Fifty-seven cars started the rally in Picton last Saturday.
At far right, Brooklyn Ford (1) watches her father, Glen, work on a car.
Holding her is Abbie Laughton (12).
Silver Fern Rally spokesman Lindsay Beer said the car park was used as a service park, where crews were allowed an hour to carry out maintenance work in preparation for racing today.
The cars raced over seven stages between Timaru and Dunedin yesterday and the event lead changed regularly, he said.
''At one stage, there was 1.6 seconds between the top two guys, so it doesn't get much better.''
Jeff Judd, of Christchurch, was 50sec ahead of the pack after the final Dunedin stage, he said.
The cars would leave the car park at 7.30am today and after three stages would stop at Clutha Valley School at Clydevale.
Three more stages would be held before the cars arrived at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill about 4.50pm for an overnight stop.
After tomorrow's stages the cars and crews would stay in Wanaka tomorrow and the rally would finish in Queenstown on Saturday afternoon, he said.
