The armed offenders squad descended on the Dunedin suburb of Tomahawk this afternoon while executing a raid on a property in the area.

A witness said they saw AOS members drive past near Bayfield High School just before noon.

Police dogs were also in the squad vehicle.

Another witness said Tomahawk Rd was cordoned off, however it has since been lifted.

The witness had seen a police van, a dog wagon and two police cars in the vicinity.

Armed police descended on the property, but it appeared no one was home and no arrests were made.

A police spokeswoman said the raid involved the execution of a ''routine search warrant''.
