A man charged with attempted murder following a central Dunedin shooting can now be named.

Kaleb Bell (25) appeared before the High Court at Dunedin yesterday, where a decision on his electronically monitored bail was deferred by Justice Jonathan Eaton.

An administrative issue meant he was unable to make a ruling but he expected to issue a judgement in a few days.

This week the Crown added an alternative charge against Bell of discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It will run alongside the initial charge and also carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment.

Bell has been behind bars since his arrest on March 14, four days after an incident in Thomas Burns St, near the skateboard park.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond previously said the occupants of a vehicle spotted a car stopped at traffic lights in Thomas Burns St, near the pedestrian overbridge.

They allegedly turned back and a passenger fired a shot at the occupied car.

The victim fled the scene, shaken but uninjured.

Damage to the bonnet of the car suggested a shotgun had been used, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Bell will appear in court again next month.
