Antonio Youngsang Bae, 31, appeared in the Dunedin District Court this week, by video link from Wellington, and admitted six charges of dishonestly using a document.
The defendant worked for Larnach Castle Ltd for more than three years and was mainly involved in online bookings and reservations before being promoted to a supervisor position.
He was secretly siphoning money for most of his employment.
The court heard that between February 2021 and February 2024 he accepted funds that were meant to be paid to the castle into his own bank accounts.
He stole the most money between October 2021 and February 2024 when he accepted $41,662 that was meant for the employer.
The court heard Bae used multiple bank cards and accounts along with his work email to trick people into giving him money intended for Larnach Castle.
In total, $86,855 was taken, including $41,662 between October 2021 and February 2024.
Bae told police he pilfered the money because he "wanted more" and confessed it was a "stupid thing" to do.
Counsel Deborah Henderson said her client had no prior convictions and would be in a position to pay the money back by his sentencing in October.
He was granted bail pending sentencing.
A Larnach Castle Ltd spokesperson said that in February last year "certain behaviour was discovered" prompting the company to complain to police.
"The ex-employee resigned immediately upon matters being brought to his attention," the spokesperson said.
"Our focus remains on the wellbeing of our team and maintaining an exceptional experience for all visitors."
They did not answer further questions about the crimes.
