Thieves target cars in hill suburbs

A dozen vehicles have been broken into or tampered with in Dunedin hill suburbs in the past few days, police say.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said since Thursday 12 cars in Kenmure, Mornington, Roslyn and Belleknowes had been broken into or unlawfully interfered with, including seven on Saturday night alone.

Standard practice for the thieves was to smash the rear passenger quarter-light to gain access to the vehicle, before plundering the interior for all valuables.

Police reiterated their advice not to leave valuables in cars.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
