Crowd watches as man beaten

A man was left unconscious and bleeding in a central Dunedin gutter after a fight between six men in front of a large crowd, police say.

The 39-year-old victim, who was taken to Dunedin Hospital in an ambulance and treated for head and facial injuries, has since been discharged from hospital, Detective Mike Bracegirdle, of Dunedin, said.

Police were seeking any witnesses to the Sunday morning incident, in which they said the man was left in the gutter after the fight outside Subway Sandwiches, in Princes St, near the Octagon.

It was understood a crowd including some "well-dressed" people, possibly attending a plumbers' convention in the city, gathered to watch the 2am brawl, Det Bracegirdle said.

The victim is described as Maori with a shiny bald head and wearing a black coat.

The main suspect was described as a "very tall" Polynesian man, about 1.9m tall, well-groomed with dark hair and wearing a light blue T-shirt.

Witnesses are asked to contact Det Bracegirdle on 471-4800.
