Department of Conservation ranger Richard Seed said it wanted to spread the message that sections further up the track still had ''severe'' damage and were suitable only for experienced trampers.
The Outram Glen part of the track is 1.8km long and leads to the Lee Stream tramping track, which is a further 2.8km and suitable only for equipped trampers.
The walk, which starts near Outram, was used by 3500 people last summer.
The department had done some remediation work on the first 1.8km, but advised users to take care.
It would look for a longer-term solution for the track in the new year, he said.
