Sophie Flack (3) gets her face painted at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum yesterday to celebrate the birthday of the 143-year-old steam locomotive Josephine.

The steam locomotive Ab 608 Passchendaele starts a return trip between Dunedin Railway Station and Sawyers Bay yesterday.

Sal Millar, of Cumbria in England, took her grandson James Batchelor (3), of Dunedin, on a one hour-hour excursion.

The ''gorgeous old wooden carriages'' were a highlight, she said.

James said the historic locomotive was loud when it tooted and he enjoyed waving at people from the carriages.

Natasha Flack, of Dunedin, said her daughter Sophie enjoyed spending time with the locomotive.

''It's one of Dunedin's icons.''

Museum educator Sara Sinclair led revellers, young and old, in a dance to the Kylie Minogue hit Locomotion before the cutting the birthday cake.
