DCC offers advice on healthy homes

In an effort to combat Dunedin’s cold, damp and draughty homes, the city council is giving out free advice.

Lisa Burrough has been hired as the Dunedin City Council’s eco design adviser, and will be able to give homeowners, landlords and tenants advice on how to make their homes warm, dry, healthy and energy-efficient. The free service includes an at home consultation and some no- and low-cost options, Mrs Burrough said.

"We can come along and give a one-to-two hour walk around the house and give advice on what kind of improvements they can do."

There were simple changes, such as using thick curtains or draught stoppers, which would make big improvements to the condition of a home, she said.

"To keep it accessible, a lot of the advice I’ll be giving will be around how to make no cost or low-cost changes."

As well as existing homes, there was advice for people building a new home or renovating, she said. Advice on how people could access subsidies for insulation and other improvements would also be provided.

The role was created after a successful short trial of the service in 2016-17, and would be reviewed after the first year.

Six other councils around New Zealand are already offering the service.
