Control of more of the city’s CCTV cameras, including those in the under-fire bus hub area, will shift to the Dunedin City Council within the next month.

Cameras at the Great King St hub, the site of increasing reports of violence and disorder among youths, are not switched on.

It appears there has been a hold up between switching responsibility for the cameras from the Otago Regional Council to the Dunedin City Council.

Regional council transport manager Garry Maloney said for the CCTV cameras to be turned on, a system had to be in place to store the recorded images and for someone to monitor them.

That was likely to happen within the next month, when responsibility was transferred to the city council.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen recently said there had been a spike in anecdotal reports of issues involving young people at the hub.

Some schools had even taken to sending people there to keep an eye on their pupils, he said.

Issues he had been told of included youths being drunk, getting into fights, huffing aerosols, bullying, and generally being intimidating.

"Cameras would help us follow up on any reports, and we’re looking forward to them coming on board.

"There’s been quite a delay since they were first proposed."

The 11 cameras to be transferred would add to the council’s existing network of 225 CCTV cameras, most of which were inside council-owned buildings.

The network also included 13 city safety cameras operating in the Octagon, which were monitored by police.

Continued mismanagement coming your way soon...

This has been all A-about-face from the kickoff.
Plan, purchase, install CCTV cameras without any plan for what happens when they are in position ready to be operational, and who is in charge.
Bus hub that caused so much disruption during construction then earns a reputation for being unsafe.
What a great way to encourage use of public transport!
Why are ORC and DCC determined to be embarassments to the people of Dunedin? We do our best to vote for competent people out of those on offer, then what causes all the foolishness, year after year, council after council?
