Motorists can now use the full length of Taieri Mouth Rd again after a detour near Kuri Bush was lifted on Thursday.

A section of Taieri Mouth Rd had been closed, between Dicksons Rd and Otokia-Kuri Bush Rd East, since May 7 but

has been reopened to a single lane.

Contractors had been replacing a culvert.

The end of the detour using Dicksons Rd and Otokia-Kuri Bush Rd East was a relief for at least one Kuri Bush resident.

For the past month, Adele Walters has used the detour almost every day. She said the route could not handle the amount of traffic being diverted on to it.

''Every time I drove along it I had to pull over for cars coming the other way. It was incredible. I even slipped off about six times because of the ice and mud.''

She had also been an unofficial delivery driver for some of the older residents in the area who did not want to use the detour.

Dunedin City Council transportation delivery manager Josh von Pein said the road was now able to be reopened to a single lane and the work was expected to be finished in about a week.

Thank God it's reopened! The "detour" was a death trap.
