Motorists faced delays for a time on State Highway 1 north of Dunedin today after two crashes an hour apart between Waitati and Waikouaiti.

In the first crash, a man and a woman were injured when their ute, a beekeeping vehicle, rolled about 3pm.

One was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, while the other was transported by ambulance.

There is no word as to the extent of their injuries.

A second, head-on crash involving two cars occurred at Evansdale about 4pm, 2km south of the earlier accident.

A Toyota Corona ended up on the wrong side of the road heading south.

The five occupants in the Corona were uninjured, according to the female driver.

An elderly man was attended to by St John staff.

A truck, a rental van and another car are against guard rail and appeared to have taken evasive action.

The highway was closed for a time, then open to one lane, and has now fully reopened, the New Zealand Transport Agency advises.
