A young Dunedin scientist finished runner-up in the Dame Malvina Major Foundation Christchurch Aria final on Monday night.

Ingrid Fomison-Nurse (27), who works at the University of Otago physiology department, was ecstatic with the result.

''I would love to further my singing. Competing means a whole lot of things open up,'' she said.

She will compete at the foundation's Dunedin aria competition in September.

Ms Fomison-Nurse, who is taught privately by university vocal coach Judy Bellingham, said Dunedin was an excellent place to learn the craft of opera.

''Dunedin is a great place for nurturing voices. There is a collegial atmosphere, everyone gets along very well,'' she said.

Hamilton singer Eliza Boom (23) won the final.

Two other Dunedin-trained singers made the finals - Sophie Sparrow (24), who was third, and Olivia Pike (22).
