A Dunedin crime squad was recognised for bringing three well known members of Southern district organised crime to justice, at a ceremony at Dunedin’s police headquarters on Tuesday.

Detective Sergeants Chris Henderson and Reece Munro and Detectives Jenepher Glover, Mike Bracegirdle, and Don Peat all received District Commander’s Commendations during the Otago Coastal Medal and Awards Presentation Ceremony at the Dunedin Central Police Station.

The five Dunedin detectives worked as a team on a intensive operation looking into a series of crimes involving thefts, violence and incidents of menacing behaviour in the South.

Southern District Area Commander superintendent Paul Basham gave out the five commendations to the Dunedin detectives who all worked on a complex investigation into a series of aggravated robberies, assaults and threatening acts across the Southern district.

Police spent long hours working with victims and witnesses throughout the investigation and in the court system, Supt Basham said.

As a result, three offenders were convicted, he said.

Det Sgt Henderson, who led the operation which ran from 2016 to 2018, said it was a highly skilled team of detectives who never gave up.

He declined to comment in detail on the operation.

Senior Constable James Jordan also received a commendation yesterday for apprehending a violent armed offender.

In total 25 police officers and staff were honoured yesterday.
