Sea scouts aboard an Andersons Bay Sea Scouts cutter had a wet start to their planned sailing early yesterday when the craft capsized in gusty conditions.

Sea scouts aboard the 5.2m-long fibreglass cutter had quickly righted their craft and bailed it out after the capsize, about 9.30am, not far from the group's boat shed, near the Andersons Bay causeway, scout organisers said.

A chase boat with sea scout leader Brodie de Gouw aboard quickly arrived and towed the cutter back to the boat shed.

''We just checked that everyone was good, and everyone was happy,'' Mr de Gouw said.

The scouts were wearing wet suits and life jackets and all were in good spirits after their ducking, with one of them, Jacob Roberts (13), saying it was ''fun''.

Police Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said a member of the public had made a precautionary phone call to the police after seeing the capsize, but the scouts had been well-equipped and had dealt with the matter themselves.
