A dozen seized donkeys are recovering at the SPCA in Dunedin.

SPCA Otago inspector Rachel Stedman said 12 donkeys, a pony and a chicken in ''varying states of ill health'' were seized from a property in Otago several weeks ago and were recovering at the shelter.

The details of the seizure remained under wraps as the investigation continued, Ms Stedman said.

The shelter had been given money to buy jackets for the donkeys and hay had been donated but the shelter would happily accept more.

''They are expensive pets to keep.''

Ms Stedman expected the donkeys to make a full recovery soon and be placed in long-term foster homes, in pairs.

However, the animals were ''a long way off'' from being available for adoption. SPCA Otago animal manager Grace Hepburn said a donkey was a ''rarity'' at the shelter but the animals were a welcome addition.

''They all have such lovely natures. ''
