Dragon boats set to grace harbour again

Dragon boats will be racing again on the Otago Harbour early next month.

The Otago Museum is organising the racing, as part of a dragon boat festival, on Waitangi Day.

About 10 invited teams are expected to do battle on the water, with street performers, musicians and a series of stalls providing further entertainment for spectators.

The February 6 event will be held in the Otago Harbour Basin and will be presented with the help of the Aoraki Dragon Boat Association, organisers say.

Museum chief executive Shimrath Paul said the festival was being organised to celebrate a prestigious visiting exhibition, "The Emperor's Dragons", from the Shanghai Museum, which was being held at the Otago Museum.

Museum director, programmes, Helen Horner said bringing back the racing would provide a "hugely fun time" for the community, and also reflected Dunedin's close sister-city links with Shanghai.

The event was part of the museum's outreach efforts, aiming to provide activities for the whole community to enjoy, she said.
