A driver escaped unhurt after his car went off the road into Otago Harbour in Dunedin today.

A police spokeswoman said the car left Harington Pt Rd, near Tamatea Rd, in Otakou and went into the water just before 4.30pm.

A man, who was alone in the car, was uninjured and swam to shore, she said.

A St John spokesman said no-one was injured and the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter was stood down.
