Drug convictions for Balclutha baker

A Dunedin jury this week found a Balclutha baker guilty of dealing methadone and BZP.

Bevan Leslie Hale (40) faced indictably laid charges of possessing the Class B drug methadone for supply, possessing the Class C drug cannabis for sale and possessing the class C drug BZP for sale.

The jury of nine women and three men deliberated for five and a-half hours before delivering their verdict in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.

They found him not guilty on the cannabis charge.

Hale was stopped by police while driving in Balclutha on February 22 last year.

During a search of his car, police found a bag containing about 100 methadone tablets, about 30g of BZP in powder form and some cannabis.

Police also found about $800 cash on Hale, mainly in $10 and $20 bills, a set of electronic scales, and multiple small plastic bags.

The Crown contended Hale's intention was to supply and/or sell the drugs, while Hale argued the drugs were for his personal use.

Hale was remanded on bail for sentence until May 17.
