Summer arrived in Dunedin for a time today, before giving way to cooler temperatures and rain later in the afternoon.

The blue skies disappeared and the sweltering 30degC high had dipped to around 16deg by 7pm.

Rain started to fall in the city mid to late afternoon, and heavy falls were reported in some other parts of Otago.

Dunedin was the hottest place in the country this morning, according to MetService, with the temperature hitting 30degC just before noon.

That's more than double the average for the month of 13.4degC.

But, in keeping with the grim and disappointing summer, the heat was never meant to last.

And tomorrow it's back to business as usual with a forecast high of just 18degC.

It's kinda refreshing to see such naive English at work here... it somehow reminds me of warm kitchens and mulled wine, to hear that 30° is twice as hot as 15° :-)
