Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal crash near Timaru in which a 7-year-old Dunedin girl was critically injured.
Daniel Anderson (40), was killed in the three-car crash, on State Highway 1 at Pareora, on Saturday afternoon.
The Dunedin girl, who was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition, was among five injured in the crash.
In a statement today police said they wanted to speak with the occupant(s) of white car travelling north on the highway at the time.
They also wanted to hear from anyone who had seen Mr Anderson's car, a black Holden HQ, about that time.
Hamish McDonald, principal of Anderson's Bay School, where the girl is a pupil, said the school had offered its support to the family.
''Our school is aware of the recent accident involving members of our school community,'' he said.
''In this situation our thoughts and concerns are certainly with the family.
''We have expressed our thoughts and best wishes to the family and offer any support that may be of help, now and in further time.''
A Christchurch Hospital spokeswoman said she was unable to provide a condition update for the girl or any others involved in the crash as the families had requested privacy.
A police spokeswoman said the cause of the accident remained under investigation by the serious crash unit.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Kevin Reynolds at Waimate Police Station on 03 689 6608.
