A global  chant for women's rights reached around the world to Dunedin on Saturday.

About 150 people, mainly women, gathered in Dunedin's Octagon to take part in the Women's March Global movement.

Dunedin's gathering was one of 616 marches spread across the United States and 58 other countries, designed to show solidarity with the Women's March in Washington DC, organisers said.

The marches, timed to coincide with US President Donald Trump's first day in office, aimed to promote women's rights in the face of the rise of far-right populism
around the world.

Dunedin's event was attended by Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei and Dunedin South Labour MP Clare Curran, who told the crowd the push for women's rights would not be stopped by "the dark clouds'' swirling around politics.

Those in attendance agreed, waving signs with slogans including ``girls just want to have fundamental rights'' and chanting ``this is what a feminist looks like''.
