A 50-year-old man has been charged with murder after his 21-year-old partner was stabbed to death in Dunedin on Monday.

Police today identified the woman as Moana Anahera Marie Aranui, and said a post-mortem completed last night confirmed she had suffered multiple stab wounds, one of which penetrated her heart.

The Dunedin woman died after being chased along Bay View Road in St Kilda by her partner following a domestic dispute, police said.

Miss Aranui's partner was in a stable condition at Dunedin Hospital, Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor said.

He was to appear before a Justice of the Peace tomorrow in a court room convened at Dunedin Public Hospital.

Mr McGregor said police would be seeking a remand in custody.

Ms Aranui's body was released to her family today.

Police expect to complete their investigations at the scene tomorrow.
