Dunedin street robber chased down

A group of passers-by chased down a cellphone thief after an assault and robbery in Dunedin's main street.

Now police want to speak to those who came to the aid of the victim.

The attack happened at 12.30am on Sunday when a man and woman were approached by another woman as they were walking besides Noel Leeming on George St in Dunedin.

The woman asked the man if he had her phone, and when he said he didn't, she started punching him in the face.

A man then became involved and also assaulted the victim by punching him in the face.

He also demanded the victim hand over his phone.

The victim handed over both his phone and wallet and the man ran off down the alley way to Great King Street.

People who witnessed the assault and have chased after the male offender and, after catching up with him, returned the victim's property.
