An end-of-year celebration acknowledging the work of Dunedin primary schools’ physical activity leaders was held at Logan Park yesterday.

Sport Otago healthy active learning adviser Katie Moodie said the event was "a real celebration of their leadership".

"They've worked with their junior students and run lunch-time activities all year and today was about coming together and celebrating their successes."

More than 80 pupils from Opoho School, Port Chalmers School, Brockville Full Primary School and North East Valley Normal School took part in games of hunger ball, goal ball and kī-o-rahi, ending the day with a colour run and water slide.

"Watching them run through the colour run and doing the slip ’n’ slide, just seeing that positive vibe was amazing."

"Children that sometimes find it hard to participate in physical activities were really getting into it, which was pretty awesome."

Members of the Willowbank Fire Service joined in the fun by spraying the water slide for the pupils.

The leadership roles were a part of the healthy active learning initiative with Sport Otago.

There were a total of nine schools in Dunedin participating in the healthy active learning initiative, which focused on improving the wellbeing of children through healthy food and drink and physical activity.

The event was a trial celebration for the physical activity leaders and Ms Moodie said the "feedback from the kaiako (teachers) and tamariki (children) were really positive."

"We’ll definitely be doing it again next year."
