The Valley Project hosted a waste diversion day on Saturday for people to dispose of used items that are not included in the regular kerbside collection.
The Valley Project manager Jen Rodgers said the aim of the day was to take nothing to the landfill.
Items that were handed in included e-waste, whiteware and random bits of scrap metal.
A team of 15 volunteers directed traffic and sorted items into categories to be distributed correctly.
Phoenix Metalman Recycling took a lot of the old batteries and community group Com2tech took old computers, mobile phones and printers which it would refurbish.
Ms Rodgers said about 600kg of waste was diverted from the landfill.
Com2tech’s trailer ended up filling up pretty early on and volunteers had to fill their cars up to transport the used goods.
The Valley Project also organised a car boot market at North East Valley Normal School where people could buy a stall for a small donation and sell their items.
"We thought that was a good way of some of those people getting rid of things that they don't want any more and don't necessarily fit into our recycling."
