There was a major downpour at Portobello yesterday - which was just fine for about 400 mainly children making the most of the local school's annual fundraising event.
Tens of thousands of litres of water, mud and slime pits and a 50m long water slide attracted about 400 registrations for the three hour event, which was held at the Portobello Domain.
Lyn Pope, of the Friends of Portobello School parents' committee, organised the fourth annual Portobello Paddock Pursuit fundraiser for Portobello Primary School.
The mud run, containing 5000 litres of water, and a separate 400 litre slime pit were popular, while the school's pool cover became a gigantic water slide, the sodden grass beyond almost doubling the slide to more than 50m.
She said numbers were similar to last year, but rain yesterday may have driven some people away earlier than expected. About $2500 was raised, compared with about $3000 a year ago.
Mrs Pope said the funds would be used to purchase ''non essential'' items for the school, including beehives and sports equipment. Some money would help pay for the renovation of the common room.
