It has taken about 600 hours to get there, but builders have nearly finished work on the Otago Community Hospice charity house.

Set for auction on Saturday, March 21, the three-bedroom house, a joint project between Certified Builders and Mitre 10 Mega, has sprung up in the Leviathan Hotel car park over the past month.

The final licks of paint have been applied this week with carpet going down today.

Finishing touches, such as door handles and curtains, would hopefully be completed on Thursday in time for the weekend's two open homes, the Certified Builders southern board representative, Mr Lunn, said.

It had been a long month for the builders as many working on the house did so on top of 40-hour weeks, but it had all been worth it as the house was looking sharp, he said.

Open days will be held on March 14 and 15, from 10am to 2pm, with the auction to be held on site at 2.15pm, March 21.

The house was "there to be sold" with no reserve and bidding to start at $100,000, hospice marketing co-ordinator Lyn Chapman said.
