Fans of everything comic, anime, gaming, zombie, Dr Who and more dressed up in their best for the Armageddon Expo at the More FM Arena at the Edgar Centre at the weekend.

Organiser Bill Geradts said the expo, which ran over Saturday and yesterday, was successful beyond expectations, with thousands more than last year flooding through the doors.

''Last year was a bit of a test really. Once we did it we would know if it was going to work, and it did, so this year we put a bit more into it.''

Hundreds of people, including many families, attended the show, with many dressing as their favourite characters from fantasy and science fiction films, television shows and books, as well as characters from anime, comics and video games.

At the expo they could play in a zombie alley, fly virtual space ships, have a photo with a dalek, join clubs, buy merchandise from their favourite shows or see, listen to and have their photograph taken with guests, including the sixth Dr Who, Colin Baker, his companion on the show Nicola Bryant, Dunedin's own Mark Strickson, who played Dr Who companion Vislor Turlough on the series, and The Hobbit dwarves Mark Hadlow and John Callen.

Dunedin teenagers Rina Watt and Kenzie Stewart (both 13), who dressed as characters from Japanese anime television series Madoka Magica said they were ''really into anime'', had been since they were ''little'', and watched everything they could about the show as often as they could.

''I'm half Japanese, so I've grown up with it. We just love it,'' Rina said.

Mr Gerardt did not have exact figures, but it was ''significantly more'' than last year's figure of 6000 visitors over the weekend.

''We'll definitely be back next year,'' he said.
