A Dunedin female rapper is set to take hip hop to the next level tonight.

Arcee, aka Rona Wignall, said female rappers were rare in New Zealand but she hoped the ''buzz'' from the party for the release of her debut album, The Arcee LP, at Refuel Bar in Dunedin tonight would help promote female rap.

Male rappers were over-represented and Miss Wignall was ''pushing'' for female rappers to be taken seriously, she said.

''This is my introduction - Hi New Zealand, I'm not joking.''

Miss Wignall (22) said she would take the stage at midnight to launch the 13-track album, the same time the album became available for download online.

She planned to perform the album from start to finish and would include some covers, perhaps from Lorde, Beyonce or Ray Charles.

The album featured the songs Rebound and Go Hard - both songs had music videos filmed in Dunedin.

Miss Wignall was born in Manchester and moved to Dunedin in 2012 to study music at the University of Otago.

Sample lyrics

Listen up while you're
watching me rap,
I'm climbing up the ropes but
aint stopping to chat,
It's easy hunting alone, yo,
when you not in a pack,
So gimme some time, I swear
you won't be wanting it back.

 - from the song Blase
