A barrel of miscellaneous dangerous goods was pulled out of the ocean at St Clair Beach on Saturday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said Fenz responded to a call about 5.30pm with two crews, one from Dunedin and one from St Kilda.

Fenz found the barrel sitting upright.

They cordoned off the area until the Otago Regional Council could collect the barrel.

Compliance manager Tami Sargent said the pollution team disposed of the container.

The council was not aware of what was in the container or how it ended up in the water.
