Up in flames

Fire tore through a Dunedin house yesterday, leaving it gutted "from end to end".

Firefighters were called to the Concord house, on the corner of Davies and Mulford Sts, at 11.36am, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.

Thick black smoke from the fire was visible from across much of Dunedin.

Station Officer Brent Key said firefighters could see flames coming through the windows as they approached, and they found it well involved upon arrival.

"It was pretty gutted, pretty much from end to end," he said.

Nobody was home when the fire broke out, he said.

Fire crews left the scene about 3.40pm.

Fire investigator Mark Bredenbeck was at the scene yesterday afternoon.

He would return today to try to establish the cause of the fire, he said.
