Significant tile failure has forced the spa pool at Mosgiel’s aquatic centre out of action for up to six months and prompted an independent report, the city council says.

The failure at Te Puna o Whakaehu occurred when the spa pool was refilled after broken tiles were repaired.

The spa was described as ‘‘unusable’’ in a social media post on Wednesday by the city council-run Dunedin Pools.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said it was ‘‘obviously disappointed’’ by the failure and was working to address it as soon as possible.

‘‘We acknowledge the disruption this causes for our pool users, and we thank them for their patience and understanding.’’

The failure occurred when the pool was refilled following a three-week closure to repair broken tiles.

‘‘As a result, we are seeking an independent report to better understand the underlying causes and determine the most appropriate solution,’’ the spokesman said.

‘‘The spa pool is expected to remain out of service, potentially for four to six months, while that work is undertaken.’’

Final timeframes and costs would be confirmed once the independent report was received, he said.

All the repair work was covered by warranty at Te Puna, meaning there would be no cost to the council.

The spa pool had issues with its tiles in 2024, just months after the facility opened, and was closed for several weeks while the problem of lifting tiles was rectified at the contractor’s expense. The council later found the tiles were incompatible with the water’s temperature.
