Flu shots for half of hospital staff

Half of Dunedin Hospital staff have received seasonal flu vaccinations this year, about 10% up on last year's figures.

Medical officer of health Dr Marion Poore said in Southland, the vaccination rate for health workers was about 40%, but a few more clinics were still to be held there so the number was expected to rise.

Figures for the take-up of flu vaccine generally in Otago and Southland would not be available until after June 30, which was the last day on which eligible people could receive free vaccinations.

Dr Poore said anecdotal reports suggested more demand than usual for the seasonal vaccine.

Many workplaces were offering vaccines to staff at special clinics.

The vaccine is free until the end of June for a variety of people, including over-65s, those with underlying chronic illness, pregnant women, children under 5 and those with a body mass index of more than 35.

Health officials advise people to get vaccinated early, before the winter flu season.

The vaccine is designed to offer protection against three strains of flu including H1N1 (swine flu).
