Former Cadbury workers enjoy Ocho tour

A tour through Dunedin's craft chocolate factory has offered moments of sweetness for some former Cadbury employees still coming to terms with redundancy.

Ocho has begun offering factory tours to fill a space left when Cadbury World closed last year.

The first group to tour through the waterfront industrial area factory yesterday comprised seven former workers of the old Dunedin Cadbury factory.

One of the workers, Megan Fairley, said she was interested in touring through Ocho to remember the positives of working with chocolate.

''When you walk along the street outside here you smell chocolate and it brings back the happy memories.''

Some former Cadbury workers were ''still raw'' and needed to heal, she said.

''With the redundancy and all that went on, it was pretty horrific.''

Walking through the Ocho factory yesterday she said she got a real sense of the whole chocolate-making process, which she did not at Cadbury.

In reaction to her experiences with redundancy she started fashion company Notion Fashion and was selling T-shirts which said ''chocolate queen'' and ''chocolate king'' to raise money for mental health campaign I Am Hope.

Ocho was supporting the endeavour.

Former employee Peter Campbell said he wanted to be shown through the Ocho factory as he was curious about its processes, having worked for Cadbury for 20 years.

''It's very different. It seems a lot tidier and a lot more organised.''

Ocho marketing manager Anna McDonald said the tour was a way of showing the community what it did.

''Our core value is transparency and here you can come and see every step.''

Several Cadbury employees had contacted Ocho saying they liked what they were doing and the conversations went from there.

I wish they would add some less bitter chocolate to their line. Not everyone enjoys very dark chocolate.
