The South is a step closer to once more having an elected health board, after former Southern District Health Board medical officer of health Marion Poore became the first person to confirm they are standing in October's local elections.

In 2015 then health minister Jonathan Coleman replaced the SDHB because of progressively worsening deficits, which sat at $27million and were projected to grow to between $30million and $42million.

As at December 31 last year, the SDHB's year-to-date deficit was $25.9million, $8.3million more than budgeted.

The Act to confirm the appointment of commissioners set this year's local body election as the deadline for the return of an elected board.

The commissioner team, headed by Kathy Grant, will hold its final meeting on November 28 and hand over to the new board in the first week in December.

Four candidates will be elected to represent the Otago constituency and three to represent Southland.

Dr Poore, who lives in Arrowtown, is standing for Southland.

''Southern DHB currently delivers health services worth over $1billion annually, so there is a huge responsibility to ensure those resources are used wisely,'' she said.

I'm sure she'll get the West's vote.
