Former Otago University Students Association president Simon Wilson is the third person to express an interest in being selected as the Labour Party candidate in Dunedin North.
Dunedin North MP Pete Hodgson will retire from politics at the next election.
Mr Wilson (25) said yesterday he had been encouraged by people within the party to put his name forward after Mr Hodgson made his intentions public.
His announcement was put on hold because of his recent marriage.
Mr Wilson is the immediate past Dunedin North Labour electorate committee chairman and a former electorate deputy chairman and secretary.
He joined the Labour Party in 2004 and was the main organiser for the university branch.
Achieving social justice was one of his driving forces behind his Labour Party involvement, Mr Wilson said.
"Dunedin is my home, I was born here and grew up here. I have a good understanding of the electorate right from my grandparents living here through to my connections with the university, students and the city."
Mr Wilson, who works at the Dunedin City Council, recently completed his masters degree, majoring in history.
The other declared candidates for selection are New Zealand Nurses Organisation national industrial adviser Glenda Alexander (55) and the head of Selwyn College, Dr David Clark (37).
