Steam locomotive Ja 1240, also known as Jessica, leaves the Dunedin Railway Station yesterday, heading to Sawyers Bay.

The train made five return trips to Sawyers Bay during the day, carrying about 1350 people, train manager Allan Boyer, of Dunedin, said.

Another 1048 passengers enjoyed the five return trips on Sunday.

''The kids are excited by it all. Some have never seen one, let alone been on one.''

The ''action and the noise'' was the appeal of the 67-year-old locomotive, Mr Boyer said.

''Trains of today are just machines, but these things were alive.''

The engine, built at the Hillside Workshops in 1947, came back to Dunedin from Christchurch to appear in the film The Light Between Oceans, which is being shot around Dunedin.
