A Fire Service spokesman said a crew from Dunedin City Station were called at 7.30pm about a smell of gas coming from the basement of the National Bank building at 193 Princes St.
Another two crews were called and responded with a gas detection monitor.
Police cordoned off part of Princes St. Nova Energy staff and the building owner investigated but failed to find a gas leak.
The crews left about 8.40pm.
``Our guys decided it wasn't too much of a danger and left it with the building owner and Nova to investigate further.''
