Good Samaritans come to rescue

Musselburgh residents came to the rescue of a 13-year-old boy who had his iPod stolen in a street attack in the Dunedin suburb yesterday.

Constable Jeremy Buis, of Dunedin, said police were called to Ravelston St about 4.40pm after a witness reported the incident.

They arrived to find a resident holding down one of two youths allegedly involved.

Const Buis said a 13-year-old boy was walking his dog when the youths walking past him grabbed his iPod and ran off.

A woman who witnessed the incident gave chase.

When she caught up with the youths, a man came to her aid and held one of them down.

The youth tried to assault his captor and spat in his face before police arrived, Const Buis said.

The other youth was located at his home shortly after.

The youths, who were held in custody last night, were likely to face serious charges.

They were due to appear in the Dunedin Youth Court today.
