The youth ambassador award gives the opportunity for a young Saddle Hill ward ''high achiever'' aged between 15 and 25 to receive a grant of $1000 to help them with their chosen sport, academic, cultural or educational endeavour.
Dunedin City Council governance support officer Lynne Robins said the idea for an award came about after several applications for monetary support from the board.
''It came about because we had someone apply for discretionary funds in 2013.
''This opened up discussions for having a grant.''
Community board chairman Scott Weatherall said youth in the area could really benefit from the award and encouraged people to apply.
''It's a really, really exciting opportunity to engage with youth. We're able to formally gift them something to impact where they're going,'' he said.
Mr Weatherall emphasised the award was for any young person, in any field in which they were achieving to a high level.
Brighton cyclist Alysha Keith was the first recipient of the award in 2013 while Fairfield swimmer and surf lifesaver Andrew Trembath was awarded it last year.
Applications close on September 18.
